The KazEOSat 1 high-resolution observation satellite is being built by Astrium for the ERSSS (Earth Remote Sensing Satellite System) of the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Weighing 900 kg at launch, the KazEOSat 1 satellite was launched by Arianespace′s Vega light launcher into a Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of about 750 km. It was launched from the Guiana Space Center, French Guiana, in the second quarter of 2014.

The KazEOSat 1 system is being controlled by Kazakh operators who have been trained by Astrium. Using images acquired by the KazEOSat 1 satellite from the entire planet, the system provides very-high-quality panchromatic and multispectral products for a wide range of applications, including cadastral surveys, management of natural resources, environmental monitoring and homeland surveillance.

  • Active lifetime period, years – 7;
  • Spatial resolution in multispectral mode, 4m. , pancromatic mode 1m.;
  • Number of multispectral channels – 4;

Imaging capabilities of Satellite per 24 hours – 220 000 square km.

Imaging modes of KazEOSat-1 spacecraft:

Imaging mode

Imaging possibilities

Strip mode

is conducted for the imaging along the route of the spacecraft, with the width of 20 km and length from 20 to 2000 km.

Area mode

is conducted along the maneuver of the spacecraft with the possibility to make the images of three adjacent strips (each of 20 km) with width of 60 km and length from 20 km to 90 km.

Stereo mode

is conducted along the maneuver of the spacecraft with possibility to make images of the same territory with different imaging angles with width of 60 km and length from 20 km to 90 km.

Data Product Levels:

L1A (1A)Digital satellite imagery, after applying of radiometric correction. Images are not given to any projection, but all information saved in accompanied metadata file.

L2A (2А)Digital satellite imagery, acquired with the use of radiometric, geometric  correction. Images are given to a cartographic projection.

L3 (3А): Digital satellite imagery, including radiometric, acquired with the use radiometric, geometric correction. Images are given to a cartographic projection. Images are orthorectified (image amended for relief) using a digital elevation model (DEM) and ground control points (optionally, if applicable).

L4 (-): Digital elevation model (DEM) and digital terrain model (DTM) are given to a cartographic projection.

L5 (3В): Mosaic, created from L3 or L4 products.
